Garden Center gets new art

Dear residents of Old Seminole Heights,

I am looking for architectural bits and pieces (molding, part of a window shutter, doorknob, porch railing, etc.) that I could use for the sculpture I am creating for the Garden Center green (see rough sketch below).

VM Ybor Home Tour

The VM Ybor Neighborhood Association will host its First Annual Home Tour. VM Ybor is located just north of Ybor City and has held an important place in Ybor and East Tampa history since its inception. Home to over 3,000 residents, the neighborhood is rich in history and within walking distance to Ybor City and downtown Tampa. This is “not so typical” home tour featuring our eclectic, diverse and historic community. 8 houses and the historic, award winning Cuscaden Pool to be featured. While many homes have been restored or remodeled, they all still contain original elements that characterize our unique community.

SPCA Dog Wash Fund Raiser

Yanni's petsitting and walking team, the San Carlos Tavern, and the SPCA were happily washing dogs Saturday afternoon. With two dog washing stations and plenty of helping hands, this is the sort of pleasant afternoon activity that makes our neighborhood great.  Seminole Heights may be known for its gracious porches, but we are a dog-loving bunch as well.

For a mere $10 donation, my two dogs got pampered by Yanni and her gang while I enjoyed a beer on the new deck at the San Carlos tavern. Dogs were walking in and out of the bar, the deck, and everywhere else. Big dogs like Hooch and little weiner dogs scampering around. Not all of the dogs were thrilled about getting wet, of course.  One in particular hid under a table to get out of the sun and away from the water.

Civic Association Elections by Sherry Simons

The September 2009 NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS, the newsletter of Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association, carries an article by the Association President Sherry Simons.  In it she describes what it’s like to be a volunteer and to hold office in a Civic Association.  This article touches the heart of volunteerism.  It is frank, perceptive, and sensitive and suggests ways that the community can support their Association and their volunteers.  With her gracious permission OSHNA has reprinted her article for its members and friends.

Resources, High Schools, and Football

Hillsborough High School is having a big Homecoming weekend and OSHNA is participating in a small part of it but wants to get the neighborhood to fill the stands and cheer for our neighborhood team.  We've got football in the neighborhood!  The weekend is filled with events--too many to list here so instead go to our Hillsborough High School page and start planing your fun football weekend.
