Big Blue Bombshell - UPDATE

The OSHNA Board would like to thank the residents of Old Seminole Heights for your combined efforts to keep our alley trash service.  The OSHNA Board and residents working "hand in hand" have persuaded the city to maintain the present level of service for now.

OSHNA's Land Use Committee Chair, Kacy Curry, received the below email:

"Good Morning Ms. Curry,

Solid Waste will be continuing alley service in Seminole Heights after June 7th until further notice. For those alleys that pose a risk, either to property or personnel, the property owner(s) will be notified specifically if the alley service to those homes will be discontinued. Ultimately, we hope that the Department of Solid Waste can work in a collaborative fashion with the OSHNA to come up with a solution that is satisfactory to everyone.

Thank you for your continued patience while we resolve this matter.

Thanks,
Mark Wilfalk
Chief of Operations
Department of Solid Waste & Environmental Program Management"

What we know so far:

Start using the big blue container for garbage. Place it in the location that your garbage service has been. The big blue container is for household garbage, not yard waste.

Use the little blue boxes for household recycling, in the location that your recycle service has been.

The current schedule will change next Monday, June 7th. On Mondays and Thursdays put out garbage in the big blue containers.

If you live West of I-275 on Mondays also put out your yard waste and household recycling.

If you live East of I-275 on Thursdays also put out your yard waste and household recycling.

Use your “old” garbage barrels or lawn/leaf bags for yard waste.

We have heard of no location change at this time for the little blue recycle boxes. That was part of the Board of Director's motion and we will be working on that.  OSHNA believes that all services, recycle, trash, and yard waste, should be picked up in the same location.

The big blue container they provide is 95 gallons however if you call 813-348-1111 you can request a smaller trash can. The other two sizes are 65 and 35 gallons however the 35 gallons are reserved for the disabled and elderly.

You do not have a choice in where your garbage will be picked up.  If your alley is able to handle the trucks, then the alley will be used.  Solid Waste will not pick up trash at the curb for one neighbor and in the alley for another on the same street.  This doubles the mileage on the vehicles.

This solution is only for the present--we've halted their process in OSH temporarily.  OSHNA will be working with Solid Waste to craft a long-term solution that respects our alleys and includes all three types of waste pickup.  If you have any questions or continue to have problems with Solid Waste, please call us, email us, leave a comment here, or let one us know when you see us in the neighborhood.

Thank you again, and keep using those alleys.  OSHNA's suggestion to residents with alleys is to keep them clean & maintained.  Join with your neighbors on doing this.  Let's not give Solid Waste any reason to discontinue service due to alleys which are not passable.

As of today the garbage trucks have not collected any garbage left in the new garbage cans in many of the alleys in my area, south of Hillsborough and east of Florida. Very few people have left them street side but theirs have been emptied. I sent a complaint on Tampagov.net on June 7th. Today, June 10,they read it but made no reply.I talked to the garbage truck driver this morning and he said his supervisor and not told them to pick trash up in the alley. I called Mark Wilfalk this morning but he did no t call back.Any suggestions?

Oakcrest,
Based on what I have been hearing, the city has failed to pick up trash in most of the alleyways, in spite of what the director told OSHNA.  One neighbor phoned in a complaint, spoke to a manager of some sort, and was informed that there would be no more alley service in direct contradiction of what we were told.

The subject will be taken up at the next executive board meeting this coming Tuesday night.  I have been asked for form a temporary "ad hoc" committee to represent OSHNA to the city on this matter.

At this point, if your trash is not picked up, you should contact two people -- 1) the city, 2) Kacy Curry, the OSHNA trustee who's heading up our efforts to resume alley service.  We need the information in order to ensure alley pick up is happening (or not) and provide that to the city.

Also, keep an eye out here because when there are any updates, we'll publish them.  If you are not signed up for the Bungalow Alerts, you should do that as well.  A link to subscribe is on the left-hand column of this website.
