I just had a contractor come to the door, stating that we had wind damage to our roof (no kidding, its an old roof). He stated that he works with the inusance company to have them pay for the roof. Does anyone know if this is legitimate?
Jenrae,
Since my roof is not wind-damaged (or any other kind of damaged), it would be fraud for me to try and claim that.
I need a new roof because my last inspection showed less than 5 years of life left and they could not estimate the age of the roof. So my insurance company dropped me, which was bad because it was a Citizens insurance company. So now we are on the unregulated insurance market and our payments went up over $150/mo. That is quite the incentive to get a new roof, even though I don't really need one. (and when I get one, I am going to preserve the receipt so I can prove its age.)
At this point I do not have a recommendation for a roofer. But I promise I'll have one in a few months.
This sounds like a scam.
The wind damage deductable on my homeowners insurance is something like 2% of the value. As I am currently bidding for a new roof, I know that my roof will cost about $8K to replace. So if my insurance company does agree to something like this, the cost out of my pocket would be more than half of the cost of a new roof. Not a bad discount, but it comes with a lot of hassle.
Now if my insurance company wonders why my home has this damage and the other homes around me don't, it might decide to deny my claim. Now that'll all happen after the new roof was put on so I would be obligated to pay the roofers the full amount of their labor. That could hurt.
I would be curious to see if they offered some add-ons to their roofing job under the guise of "who cares, your insurance company is covering half of the cost! Go for it!" When, in all likelihood, the insurance company will cover none of it.

are you trying to file a claim with your insurance company for the new roof, or are you just going to leave them out of it?
Do you have any recommendations for roofers?
