Can someone recommend an insurance company who will insure an old, wood-frame house REASONABLY? I am beside myself...We have had Liberty Mutual since we have been here and they have been priced below what I think other insurers are at.
Any suggestions would be welcome....
We ran into the same issue. Our company is dropping us. We searched all over and Citizens is the only company that will insure us. Period. They also required us to put up a porch railing. Very frustrating being railroaded into one company with a monopoly on the market!
Another follow up - 90 days after issuance, I recieved a letter of cancellation, stating they had not received a 4 point inspection, and I had no railings on a deck/stair. REALLY? My agent (Kathy Scholl at First Patriot on Kennedy) sent me a copy of the inspection, and I would have thought that they requied that to underwrite and issue the policy. I was told I was all set. I am reading on the NAIC website that an insurer can cancel for any reason UP TO 60 days after issuance....we are at 90. This doesn't sound right, and of course the same agent who calls you on the weekend trying to sell you a policy will not call you on the weekend when there is a problem, and UPC does not have weekend customer service. This seems to be never ending.
We've had success using a broker who represents several insurance companies. We recommend calling him:

OK, for those in the same boat, United Propert Casualy (UPC) came in at the same premium as Liberty Mutual; just need to have a 4-point inspection done. I'm very relived...and will be even more relieved once the policy is issued.
Royal Palm would insure us, but at a "premium premium".
We've just been dropped from the company that picked us up after Citizens. I imagine we'll end up back at Citizens. We've been here 11 years and have had something like 6 different companies insurance us.
If I had to pay for an inspection for each of those, it would start to get really expensive.

In New York State, an investigation into force-place insurance has begun. This investigation might lead to nothing, however, if large banks are given protection by the government. Article resource: Force place insurance practices under investigation
