TPD sent out an alert today warning of a series of "kick in" home buglaries.  These occurred in the Western part of Old Seminole Heights on both sides of Sligh Avenue, West of I-275.  Please keep on the lookout and call 911 if you see any suspicious activity.

TPD Message:

Today in sector D, in the following grids 43 & 51, with homes in the block numbers of 8000 N. Highland, 500 E. North St & 6500 Blk of Wellington have experienced 3 kick in style break ins.  These burglaries occurred in well kept homes.  Sgt Clark would like for you to know that these burglaries happened before lunch time.  The burglars appear to be using a vehicle because of the quantity of items being taken.  Items include large flat screen televisions, jewelry & other electronics.  At this time there have been no witnesses to report what type of vehicle is being used.  NHW leaders are asked in this area particularly, try to notify neighbors of today's events.  A reverse 9-1-1 is going out as well.  As always, if you see or hear anything suspicious, please call 9-1-1.  Thanks

Arrest made today

TPD arrested two individuals in a stolen car at Central and Hiawatha. They had stolen goods in the car. TPD believes they were about to commit another kick-in type burglary.

Every city the size of Tampa has its share of crime.  The important thing is how we respond as neighbors by taking steps to make our area less attractive to criminals.  As neighborhoods go, we are very active, have a robust partnership with TPD, and the steady decline in crime is proof of it.

Please remember to secure your home as best you can and to write down the serial numbers of your electronics.  The most popular items to steal seem to be flat screen televisions, gaming consoles, and laptops.

Crime Alerts

Sean,
Once again, I'd like to voice my disapproval of crime alerts on the website to be read by the whole world.  It just doesn't reflect positively on our neighborhood.  An e-mail to our membership would more likely be read sooner than the website.

Crime Alert Policy

Bill,

I'd be happy to sit down with the board and discuss an alert policy.  I understand your position.  There are a number of barriers placed in front of OSHNA right now in getting these alerts out and the website is currently the best option we have.

There are a few possible alternatives that I had previously ruled out. I would be happy to revisit them if you think we can overcome the associated issues.

Otherwise, the alternative, quite frankly, is no crime alerts at all.  Active crime awareness does reflect possitively on the neighborhood; it shows we care and that we are helping each other combat it.
