Route 1 Ride: SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone who came out and joined our Hampton Terrace neighbors on a HART Route 1 adventure. It was a blast, & we're always excited to introduce new people to how easy it is to take transit downtown, to Channelside, to Ybor City, and to USF — all for free! The bus just keeps getting better!

July is Smart Irrigation Month! Smart Irrigation Month takes place in our rainy season. It's a good reminder that our summertime rains mean that we can turn our irrigation systems off completely. Not only does this protect our water resources, but it can save you money on your utility bill. It's a win-win for Tampa!

Take time this month to make sure your irrigation system is working properly and efficiently. Keep a close eye on your rain sensor. On average, a properly working rain sensor can save almost a thousand gallons of water every week by shutting off your irrigation system when it rains.

Need a rain sensor? Email SaveWater@tampa.gov , and they’ll send it to you for free. It’s that important! For more help with making the most of your irrigation system, check out tampa.gov/WaterSmarter for important tips and tools.

Tampa Bay Water Wise rebates are also available for people looking to replace their old toilet, install a smart irrigation controller, and/or make several other water-efficient upgrades. Visit the  Tampa Bay Water Wise website  for more details.

This Month In OSHNA History

It was this month 25 years ago that Seminole Heights said goodbye to a fine neighbor:

The property where the Brauners owned this long-lasting Dairy Queen originated in the hands of Seminole Heights hotelier Joe Martinez. Meanwhile, a neighborhood kid named Tommy Skornscheck starting tearing up the gridiron as a 5'11" 195lb offensive lineman—first at Hillsborough High, and then at Clemson.

After college and the Army, Tommy married Joe Martinez's daughter Emily, and they set to renting the property in the early 1950s to the Brauners (who ended up buying it outright in 1972).

Seminole Heights had no shortage of ice cream places—especially once the Howard Johnson's at the corner of Florida and Hillsborough opened—but Dairy Queen is Dairy Queen.

It was also the regular victim of crime:

Meanwhile, a new generation of Skornschek was getting into the restaurant biz—in which he remains today:

Tom Skornscheck died in 2000.

Porch Party Hosts Needed!
