This Month In OSHNA History

It was 100 years ago this month that the Lyons building, at the corner of Hillsborough and Florida avenues, opened with a two-page spread in the Tampa Times .

The building — established by then neighborhood president Joe Lyons, a name you'd be familiar with from past episodes — was at 5401 N. Florida, and just one of the centers of commerce that would eventually occupy all four corners of the intersection.

It was a popular intersection for the Burgert Bros., who took numerous exposures of the area over the decades. This shot looks south toward the intersection from Florda; the Lyons building is on the left.

This shot looks west on Hillsborough. The Gulf Oil station on the northwest corner of Hillsborough & Florida was photographed numerous times:

By 1949, a Howard Johnson's restaurant was opening up on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The Lyons building property and the Gulf Oil property eventually became victims of Hillsborough Avenue widening, and the HoJo faded to memory as well. Some day, perhaps the neighborhood will be able to reclaim at least part of the intersection that "progress" seized from us.

Porch Party Hosts Needed!

Hosting the monthly OSHNA Porch Party is one of the easiest and most fun ways to get involved in the neighborhood. With the Neighborhood Involvement Committee volunteers handling most of the arrangements, they aren't much work, either! To sign up to host, check out the link to the form in the button below.
